Islamabad: According to press reports, the National Assembly Standing Committee on Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives, chaired by Junaid Akbar, established a subcommittee to monitor the work of the Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority (ERRA) on the New Balakot City Development project on Monday (August 16).

Three members of parliament, Saleh Muhammad Swati, Muhammad Sajjad, and Syed Agha Rafiullah, will make up the panel.

The Balakot City project, which cost PKR 13 billion and was launched by then-President Musharaff in 2007, was anticipated to cost PKR 13 billion. However, even after 13 years, the project was still unfinished.

The Sub-committee established to oversee ERRA’s activities is bound by two Terms of Reference (ToRs):

1. To settle the case referred by the Speaker’s Office on June 30, 2021, concerning the release of monies for victims of the Suki Kanari Hydro Power Dam Project in River Kunhar, Mansehra.

2. To track the ERRA’s work on development projects in the districts of Mansehra and New Balakot.

The project was supposed to be finished in four phases, but only two of them have been completed thus far.
