Lahore: According to news reports, the Punjab government has approved a plan by the Punjab Industrial Estate Development Management Company (PIEDMC) to convert the Chunian (Kasur) Industrial Estate Project into an aqua business park. The industrial estate is situated 40 kilometers from Lahore, near Bhai Pheru.
The Chunian (Kasur) Industrial Estate will be transformed into Pakistan’s first seafood species breeding facility, the Chunian Aqua Business Park. After it was discovered that the land purchased for the industrial estate was unsuitable for an industrial estate due to the increasing saline groundwater table, the said development arose.
According to reports, the company conducted soil tests on the land purchased for PKR 350 million and discovered that the groundwater table is just 10 feet or higher – making it unsuitable for the construction of the industrial estate. Later studies concluded that the area was suitable for ‘breeding, developing, and exporting seafood species, particularly crab, prawn, and shrimp.’ Furthermore, the land was suitable for fish farming, so fishing was added to the project for local consumption. After the current Lohari Gate fish market in Lahore is relocated, the park’s produce will be sold at a nearby planned mega fish market project on Multan Road.
