Rawalpindi: A fire that erupted at a model market along Peshawar Road on Tuesday destroyed almost two dozen shops. The fire, however, caused no injuries and was brought under control by firemen after several hours.

According to witnesses, the fire started in a shop where welding work was being done at 1 p.m. and spread to nearby shops selling old clothes and other stuff.

Fire engines and ambulances were dispatched to the scene after Rescue Services 1122 was notified. The firefighting operation involved a total of 13 rescue vehicles and two ambulances.

The fire was classified as ‘A’ level by the rescue services, and it took more than three hours to put out. However, the improvised businesses were completely destroyed, resulting in a loss of Rs2.8 million. 26 shops were completely destroyed, according to a fire department officer.

In a statement, the Rescue Services 1122 recommended people to use particular caution when using gas heaters during the winter because they can cause an accident if used carelessly.
