Islamabad: The Aga Khan Agency for Habitat (Akah) and the National University of Sciences and Technology’s (Nust) office of sustainability have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish sustainable habitat plans for disaster-prone regions in northern Pakistan. According to a news release from Nust, Akah will work with Nust to establish habitat plans for five valleys in Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral that are vulnerable to climate change-related catastrophes.

Dr. Rizwan Riaz, pro-rector of RIC Nust, said in his remarks, “Embedding basic concepts of sustainability is one of Nust’s strategic goals.” We want to link all of Nust’s key activities, including academic and student engagement, research and innovation, operations and governance, and stakeholder management, with the UN SDGs, converting Nust into Pakistan’s first SDG-engaged 4th generation university.”
“In the previous several years, Pakistan has seen the greatest effect of climate-related catastrophes in its history,” said Nawab Ali Khan, chief executive officer of Akah. Thousands of lives have been lost, millions of people have been displaced, and the country has suffered significant economic losses.”
