Rawalpindi: In a piece of recent news, the Commissioner Syed Gulzar Hussain Shah stopped the land purchase in Rawalpindi and Attock for the building of the Rawalpindi Ring Road project on Wednesday and directed the district administration to establish teams to collect the Rs. 2.45 billion given to the landowners. Land purchase was halted due to allegations of corruption in the Ring Road project.
An investigation at the highest level of the province administration found that alterations were made to the Ring Road’s real design to build additional road infrastructures purportedly to benefit some private housing societies, resulting in a Rs25 billion increase in the project’s cost.
As the scandal grew, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Sayed Zulfiqar Bukhari resigned, while Aviation Minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan dismissed the claims of corruption and vowed to leave politics if they were proven. The Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) had been asked to provide the payment record to the administration. He said after the scam, the record was sealed to avoid tampering with the figures.
