Lahore: On Thursday, the Lahore High Court plead with the Punjab Government lawyer to evacuate the stay against Ravi Riverfront Urban development Project’s work.
Justice Shahid Karim dismissed the request and observed that the government did not appear serious in obeying the environmental laws. For the mega-development and housing projects, the judge was appealed regarding the challenging acquisition of agricultural land. The advocate Sheraz Zaka claimed that the land acquisition laws had been deliberately violated in the projects as the farmers were being deprived of their lands.
On behalf of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a law officer filed a report and said the Ravi Urban Development Authority (Ruda) was under review process as per the regulations and submitted the Environment Impact Assessment (EIA). He mentioned that for safeguarding the natural environment strictly, the EPA took every possible caution in the EIA review process. The judge postponed the hearing till April 1 and dismissed the government’s appeal to withdraw the stay order.
The judge also conveyed his disappointment over the Lahore Waste Management Company LWMC for not filing a reply regarding garbage dumping.
