Islamabad: According to news published today, the Karakoram Highway Phase-II – Havelian-Thakot Road – was granted the best Bridge/Tunnel Award at the 9th annual Engineering News-Record (ENR) Global Best Projects competition (October 1).

According to the information provided, the aforementioned road is a significant connecting project being carried out under the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The project was recognised for its superior construction and design. According to Nong Rong, the Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan, CPEC has the world’s best tunnels and bridges.
Havelian-Thakot road is a 118-kilometer-long connectivity project, according to project information. The commercial contract between China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) and the National Highway Authority was signed in December 2015. China Communications Construction Company Ltd completed the project at a cost of USD 1,315 million.

In addition, the connectivity project includes 105 bridges, with three tiny, 42 medium, and 60 big bridges. Six tunnels are included in the project: four on the Class II highway and two on the expressway.
