CHITRAL: In the Khairabad area near Drosh city, a suspension bridge was inaugurated, benefiting over 450 households from various villages.
The bridge was built as a joint venture between the Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF) and the Sarhad Rural Support Program (SRSP) under the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) Pakistan’s Program for Poverty Reduction (PPR).
According to village elders, the facility would directly benefit more than 450 households in the Khairabad, Kol, Camp, and Wardhap Payeen regions, who have previously been deprived of critical socioeconomic opportunities due to inaccessibility.
Ms. Emanuela Benini, Director AICS Pakistan, unveiled the plaque and expressed her delight at the bridge’s renaming as the “Pakistan-Italy Friendship Bridge.” AICS aspired to build a strong developmental network in Pakistan, she said, and this bridge was the first step in that direction. She hoped that the bridge would give the local community, like the rest of the district, greater access to health and educational services.
According to PPAF’s Shams Badruddin, such ventures will provide convenient access to health and educational facilities in the district for the local population. Lower Chitral deputy commissioner Hassan Abid praised the Italian government, the PPAF, and the SRSP for assisting the KPK government in the district’s growth.
He said that communication infrastructure was crucial in the development of a region. The newly constructed bridge will transform residents’ lives, he said.
