Sania Safi, an additional deputy commissioner, oversaw the operation. During the incident, a considerable number of police officers, an armoured personnel carrier, and a Rescue 1122 fire department were deployed to deal with any eventuality.

The chief commissioner issued the instructions for the operation after receiving orders from the chief minister to reclaim state land from encroachers.

Officials claimed encroachers had been sent notices a week ago to remove encroachments voluntarily, but that the notices had had no effect. From the FC Market, the operation began. Later on, though, the businesses began to remove the encroachments themselves. By 3 p.m., almost 70% of the task had been finished.

Ms. Sania Safi told journalists that the operation would go on until all structures built along the irrigation channels were demolished.
