Torkhum: Mian Zahid Hussain, Chairman of the National Business Group Pakistan and President of the Pakistan Businessmen and Intellectuals Forum, has emphasised that the government should establish special economic zones in Torkhum and Chaman, reduce smuggling, encourage documented trade, improve infrastructure, reach Central Asia via Afghanistan, and sign agreements in light of new circumstances.
According to him, such actions will benefit the Pakistani economy and increase economic activity in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He believed that the government should not overlook Afghanistan’s valuable market. Massive opportunities, including rebuilding projects, await Pakistan following the troops’ departure, he added, but the prospects have failed to capture politicians’ full attention.
Despite a predisposition towards Pakistan, Mian Zahid believes that continuing price increases in building materials, food goods, and other commodities may compel the Afghan government and importers to begin importing from other regional nations.
He said that the government should have developed a market-capture strategy as soon as withdrawal indications arose, but that it was not taken seriously.
