Islamabad: According to news reports, to protect the welfare of workers, Ehsaas has launched the ‘Mazdoor Ka Ehsaas Report.’

On the eve of World Labour Day, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection Dr. Sania Nishtar and SAPM on Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development Syed Zulfikar Bukhari co-chaired a webinar to launch the study.

Dr. Aliya Khan, a labor economist, was on the stand, as were members from the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development, the International Labour Organization (ILO), the Employers Federation of Pakistan (EFP), the Pakistan Workers’ Federation (PWF), the World Bank, and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

Dr. Sania Nishtar, who spoke at the webinar, said the study is the first of its kind and will assist the government in focusing on universalizing the social security system in Pakistan, with a specific emphasis on including informal economy workers.

The Ehsaas Labour Expert Group (LEG), which comprises distinguished experts from the federal and provincial governments, employers, trade unions, academia, the private sector, development partners, and NGOs, has suggested interventions to extend social security with maximum multiplier benefits for the labor class.

To this end, the Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety Division (PASSD) is establishing a dedicated unit to work continuously for the welfare of workers in the informal sector, agriculture, and the formal sector who are not covered by current social security initiatives.

According to the Labour Force Survey 2017-18 microdata, 24.89 million employees are at risk of job loss and income loss; however, the government has taken unprecedented measures to mitigate the economic damage caused by the coronavirus pandemic, according to SAPM Dr. Sania.

The report’s informative conclusions and implementation recommendations were widely praised and supported by the expert group.
