Chitral: On Thursday afternoon, a fire broke out in the core zone of Chitral Gol National Park above Theengshen hamlet. Syed Sarmad, divisional forest officer of the park’s wildlife division, told this correspondent that local community volunteers were assisting wildlife and forest department personnel in putting the fire.

He said efforts were being made to keep the fire from spreading into the thickly populated area of the forest. So far, around 100 acres of the forest have been damaged, according to Mr Sarmad. According to him, the forest featured chilgoza pine trees, and one of the likely causes of the fire’s breakout could be chilgoza collectors’ irresponsibility during the harvesting season.
