Islamabad: According to press reports, the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) granted a joint venture of Harbin Electric International Company and Harbin Electric Machinery Company (HEIC-HEMC) the electromechanical works contract for the 1,530 megawatts (MW) Tarbela 5th Extension project on Friday.

The JV was awarded the USD 241.1 million project after an international competitive bidding process. In addition, WAPDA Chairman Gen Muzammil Hussain told the media that the project will help fulfill the country’s growing energy need. In May 2021, the WAPDA awarded the civil work project for the 5th Extension project.
In another development, construction on the expansion of the Kachhi Canal has begun. Three contracts totaling PKR 19.504 billion relating to the project will be completed by August 2022. The project, which includes work on a 40-kilometer expansion of the current canal and the construction of a distribution system to irrigate 30,000 acres of land in the Dera Bugti area of Balochistan, was granted through three independent bids.
