Lakki Marwat: The Kurram Tangi dam project, according to members of the Bannu Bachao Tehreek, or Save Bannu movement, is harmful to the people, particularly farmers, as it would reduce water in the Kurram River and render rich land in the region barren.

They were speaking in a jirga in Bannu’s Mamakhel neighbourhood on Wednesday. The gathering was also attended by elders from Mamakhel, Dardareez, and Havaid. Syed Qaiser Abbas, Salim Khan, Malik Rabbani Khan, and others were among the speakers.

They claimed they were opposed to the proposal because it would limit their water rights, which they had enjoyed since the British era. They said that the dam being built in Waziristan district will deprive the people of their water rights, particularly the Bannu area farmers. They also stated that the dam project would have a negative impact on the southern district’s water table.
